About Scott Somerville
My Story
Who I am
I am Scott from Edinburgh in Scotland. I am a qualified and experienced English language teacher with over fourteen years’ experience. While studying law, I did an exchange year in the Netherlands and I discovered my love for travel, experiencing new cultures and enjoying the joys of new languages and helping others learn mine. After completing my law degree I moved to Madrid and began my teaching career. Since then I have taught in Spain, Italy and Scotland. Living in different countries gave me the opportunity to experience the difficulties and frustrations of learning a new language.
Experience
I have been teaching IELTS for more than eight years and have a deep knowledge of the exam and have helped lots of students to succeed in the IELTS exam. My experience as a teacher also includes other exam preparation, general English, business English and English for young learners. Throughout this time I have kept up-to-date on modern language learning approaches and have developed a wide range of teaching skill.
Education
I completed my Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Other Languages (CELTA) in 2006 in Madrid. This gave me a good grounding on which to base my future development in the field of language learning. In order to refresh my skills in my IELTS tutoring, I completed an IELTS workshop run by the British Council in 2016. My educational background lies in law, which I studied at The University of Edinburgh. I believe that this degree has given me a keen eye for detail.
Approach
One of my main aims as a language teacher is to make my students more effective learners by practising techniques that have been demonstrated to improve language learning. These are used during my IELTS classes, though the main focus is on exam strategies to provide realistic improvements in achieving student goals.
